Bella with Doll

Ken recently acquired the newest iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil 2. Eager to explore its wide range of features, he spent considerable time practicing and experimenting. Consequently, he crafted a detailed digital illustration of Bella and her cherished doll. This personal project was incredibly rewarding; furthermore, it allowed him to explore new artistic paths and significantly improve his skills. Additionally, this endeavor helped him build more confidence in his digital artistry. Moreover, it opened up opportunities for future creative projects.

Bella Step 1

Begin with a reference photo on a ghosted background layer to capture the basic outline. Here you’ll see we use a photo of a little girl, Bella and her doll. It’s also a good idea to keep an extra copy of the image on the pasteboard for reference while working.

Step 2

Start by adding grayscale details from the top left corner, moving down and to the right. Use multiple layers for flexibility, allowing you to experiment and easily revert to an earlier version.

Step 3

Complete the details and shading. This is when Bella truly comes to life.

Step 4

First, collect all grayscale and line art elements. Position them at the top and set them to multiply. Then, start coloring the illustration. Furthermore, using multiple layers for each section helps with blending and experimenting.

Step 5

Complete coloring the illustration and save it as a PSD file. Then, add blur effects in Photoshop for more realism. Lastly, sign the finished artwork and you’re done.
